Where are we heading towards?

26/11 was a black day for every Indian or I would say, for humanity. We all were deeply shaken, horrified and angry with this act of barbarism.
All the TV channels were continuously telecasting the horrendous incidence live and we were watching that like we watch a cricket match live or a movie, from the comfort of our homes and away from the horrific drama which was unfolding live in front of us.

First and instant reaction of the public was anger, and then statements like ‘enough is enough’ have been coming out from them. They don’t want politicians to take any political advantage of this situation and now the public is fed up of false promises and sham faces of the politicians.
But how long this anger, this helplessness and these feelings are going to reside in us? As I feel that every memory has its expiry date and after that these memories are thrown out of our minds.

People have already resumed their work as usual and nothing is going to change for them; it is always the actual family who has been affected that suffers the great loss of their dear ones & for the rest of the public, life goes on.

This whole drama and horrific act made me think about the very basic thing…. where are we heading towards? What kind of life are we going to have ahead of us?
With advancement in technology the future terror attacks are going to be more dangerous. May be with the advent in technology, terrorist of the future will be able to blow up airplanes or buildings, sitting at home. Tons of RDX won’t even be needed to destroy the buildings and to kill innocent people. Small electronic equipments would be sufficient to do the havoc. Then there will be also biological wars. Thus there will be ‘n’ number of ways the terrorists can use to kill people. War won’t be fought on the borders but it will be fought everyday within your own country with the faceless enemies.

Enough has been said about what the politicians should be doing and what things and changes are needed in the system to take place. But why only blame politicians? We are also equally to be blamed. Who are politicians? They represent the cross section of India. Corruption is deep rooted within all of us. Tell me one office where corruption is not there? Let it be govt, semi govt , any public or private organization. So we have to change the mentality of all the people. It would be foolish to expect only politicians to behave like gods.

The morality in all the people in general is declining!!! This is a materialistic world. The percentage of good people having good moral values is less than 1% and these 1% people are neither in politics nor in any job which serves the country. There is a dearth of wise, noble & good people in this whole world. That is what I feel.

People get carried away by speeches; people get carried away by provocative statements. Very few wise people have their own thinking and they don’t let provocative talks to affect them.
Now media says ‘enough is enough… and politicians don’t try to gain any political agenda out of this terrorists attack’ public then mime their word. In a way it is not bad…if it is going to take us in positive direction. So remember ‘enough is enough’ are not the thoughts of ordinary Indian people but they are imposed upon them by the media. Tomorrow if media says something else people will start chanting that…people do not have their own views.

That means media can play a good role in any national movement; media has to be very responsible and careful while giving any statements. Like the people get carried away by the provocative statements, these terrorists are also getting carried away by the provocative speeches of their leaders and then these leaders of the terrorist’s organization are using this negative energy to kill innocent lives.

What I feel is that this terrorism has to be fought at 2 levels. How doctors treat any disease they treat the symptoms as well as the root cause. So right now we also have to fight on 2 levels ...immediate action would be to treat the symptoms i.e. try to destroy these terrorists camps but the longer process which will be the permanent solution of the problem will be to treat the root cause.... i.e. make these countries grow economically help them become stronger...If every youth is having a good job and education then they wont have time to get provoked and get indulged in heinous activities. If we see, all these terrorists come from very poor background and these poor, jobless youth are then misguided and brainwashed by their leaders, under the name of Jihad.

But are we only threatened by the terrorists? The answer will be No.
Following points according to me are some of the root causes of many problems affecting the world.
1. Materialism
2. Need and hunger for more and still more money and that too without any hard work
3. Want of instant name and fame.
4. Extreme social inequality… In today’s world we have some people who have lot of money, who are living a lavish life and at the same time we have people who don’t have house, who don’t even have a morsel to eat. People are dying of hunger in some part of the world and somewhere people are wasting food.
5. Fierce competition, rat race at every front in life.
6. People want happiness but they don’t know how to get it.
7. We want more money and security and therefore both the husband and wife have to work. We have nuclear families & children are raised either by the day cares or by maids. Children don’t know how to deal with emotions because they are been deprived from the love and security needed to them in their tender years. What is a result? We are going to have future generation which is devoid of any affection and love and the generation which is extremely materialistic.
If we watch the cartoons or the games made for children, it all contain so much of violence. Killing the enemies with guns and using different kinds of weapons are the games which children are playing these days. So killing people is a game for these children - the future citizens of the world.
8. According to me the gravest problem in front of the world in the future would be the mental health of the people. We are going to have all kind of mental health problems. We are going to have future generations where people are going to be like robots, killing other people not affecting their minds.

So now I feel that there is a need for drastic change in the children’s curriculum.. Along with the other subjects like mathematics and science we need to teach them tolerance, resilience, respect and love for each other not just through text books but also through examples.

There is a need for new social law wherein before getting married people will be taught the true meaning of marriage, importance of love. There should be lessons in parenting, strict guidelines about good parenting also some compulsory classes and courses regarding parenting and child development and this education should be free and compulsory to every living human being in this world. I think this would be the new religion.

Why religion in the first place came into existence? …to give people guideline about how to lead a good life. So with changing times, with the changing world we need to have new curriculum we can call it as new religion which will give good guidance to people to lead a good and happy life.

If every human being is going to have good moral values and good strong emotional foundation then they will have happy families and happy families will have happy children and this will eventually lead to happy societies and a happy world.

Children are the future. Give them love - loads of love, be patient with them, give them healthy surrounding and we will have a peaceful world to live in.

These terrorist organizations know this basic thing that we have to corrupt the minds of the children from very early stage so now they have been really making them human bombs by giving them provocative speeches from the early age.

We have to do the exact opposite…we have to teach these children how to love and respect each other.

  1. I have few more points to add...

First of all...it’s not that uneducated or poor people who have been brainwashed...
In Gujarat blast the techie who had send the threat mail was a very well educated, from a upper middle class family, earning a very handsome salary from a well known IT company..with a booming career.
What influenced him to be part of such horrific act?
I feel the people who are behind the scene are on the lookout of those
Possess the knowledge and can be easily brainwashed on the pretext of religion.

Where does the money come from to get all the hi tech equipment and for training?
There should be very stringent law against money laundering.
People should be made more aware and alert on money laundering.
Unless and until these people have financial support they will continue doing this again and again.

It needs a very big network of people to do a terrorist attack, so we cannot just blame outside people, there are sure unpatriotic people within who pass on information, so we too require a human intelligence network to prevent ourselves from such horrendous acts.
Prevention is always better than cure.

We can’t blame the politician as well, because we are the people who are responsible of electing them. If we perform our duty towards our country then maybe the political scenario of our democratic country will change for better, so the time have come that we awaken and also by our action we make our future generation aware of our civil rights.

One more thing that comes to my mind is about the people who protect us that is the police , they are paid so less, they are so less equipped to fight against this hi tech terrorist, I think these people should be paid well, so corruption will reduce and they should be well trained and made well equipped.

  2. I agree with u anushka that hi tech professionals are also invloved and also money is pumped in by many wealthy people.. I do agree... but people who are doing these 'fidayeen' attacks who are more in numbers are the people who are extremely poor and who are directionless in life.
and let them be poor or educated these youths are brainwashed... so what I have emphasised on is change in the curriculum of these children. Read that para... so everything boils down to the root and that is child development and proper environment for the children. If children have sound emotional background and good values in life they can not be brainwashed even when they grow young. Just refer to that para....

But your views are equally true.

  3. Actually, I forgot to compliment on your blog, and I totally agree with your view and I dont have a second opinion about what you have written, educating and making everyone employed is must, but there are some people like i mentioned to you before who besides having all this get into jihad and all, how to track them? what is that they get motivated? because the person i mentioned concerned with gujarat blast is from a good family background , i have read his parents interview, it seemed to me as very well thought people.

  4. Good thoughts to make the world a better place, Varsha.
I would like to say the following:

Why did it take us loss of another 200 lives to realize that this is inhuman and barbaric? Has it not always been barbaric whenever terrorists have struck? Innocent people were being savagely killed and definitely it was no game of cricket that was being watched with pleasure. Instead, it was pain, anger, anguish and frustration on “how much more”.

India is plagued by “religion-ism” and “region-ism”. Though per se these are not the reasons of disturbances but the vehemence with which we are prepared to fight for it that leads to conflicts. It’s an open secret that we are fanatic about religion as well as region. This hard-line following is misused by the politicians as well as other countries to foment hatred amongst the already divided groups.

The solution, from the point of view of people, has to be both top-down and bottom-up. I am not talking about going up in the same lift in which we just came down. It’s mutually exclusive to a good extent. Top down approach should promote moderate religion-ism as well as region-ism. In bottom-up approach people should create a system to educate (not only school curriculum) children and encourage them to be tolerant.

    Moderate Religion-ism and Region-ism:

Communal violence is not uncommon in India. Both Hindu and Islamic fanatics miss no opportunity to vilify each other and create a situation of mistrust between the communities. This results in riots and destruction of tax payers’ property. So how do we change this? The first change we need is to have real faith and trust in each other and express it.

Until 26/11, Muslims were largely a mute spectator of the massacre unleashed by Islamic fundamentalists, encouraging them to think that they have support from a section of the society and repeat their horrific acts. In the aftermath of 26/11 this is the first time, correct me if I am wrong, that the Muslim community has come out so openly to condemn terrorism and show solidarity with their country men. I salute them for this gesture. An immediate and timely expression of condemnation would discourage politicians, fundamentalists as well as foreign countries from further sowing the seeds of mistrust. “A stitch in time saves nine”. The same applies unequivocally to Hindus whenever Muslims or Christians are attacked.

Everyone remembered Raj Thackray while the terrorists were on a killing spree. When he and his goons were provoking locals against immigrants, the regional people should have come out openly to condemn him and his actions rather than finding reasons to support him by quoting some railways employment system. If there is a problem with the system then take it up with the authorities. Why kill or bother innocent immigrants from other regions? People have to be on the right side of the fence decisively. Sitting on the fence will always be exploited by the politicians for their personal gains.

We need to come out of micro-level, narrow and selfish thoughts and start looking at things from a macro angle. We need to involve everyone around us to participate in sharing different culture rather than recoil in the shell.

I am a Rajasthani by origin, born in UP, finished higher studies in Delhi, went to Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh for audits, worked in Maharastra, have home in Gujarat and currently living in Russia. Don’t mistake me. I am not trying to praise myself but I am grateful to God that He wrote my destiny in such a way that I was lucky to closely appreciate various cultures and people from all walks of life, religion and races.
I think the readiness to go to different places and eagerness to understand and enjoy different cultures is what results in acceptability and tolerance. It cannot be taught in the classroom or at home by giving lectures. Parents have to understand this and encourage their children, at various ages, to mingle with people of other cultures. How can this be done? Well, the first step is accomplished by the schools. Though not specifically intended, it’s a by-product (some may argue otherwise). The subsequent and more specific step could be by way of compulsory military training (I feel NCC is not sufficient) for both young girls and boys. Here Government intervention will be required. Young people from one state should be sent for military training to another place which is at least 5000 km (is that too much?!) away from their place of domicile and prepare them for emergencies as well as make them contribute socially by way of helping locals.

    This will ensure:
    1) Preparedness for emergencies (not only terror attacks)
    2) Change of place - mobility
    3) Interaction between people of various cultures
    4) Social service
    5) Exercise and fitness and hence healthy off-springs.
    5) Channelization of energy in constructive areas rather than eve-teasing, smoking, drinking or spending hours in front of the mirror painting faces (sorry girls!).

Education is a must. It’s a different story that our current education system belongs to the Jurassic era and needs overhauling. It should be made more interesting and less cumbersome. With the present arrangement, it’s too much for the kids to handle and this is where they start to fall prey to stress – the fear of failure. Fear of failure arising from cumbersome and burdensome syllabus should be minimized at the earliest. Fear of competition does not come from burden but from feeling inferior. Competition extracts the best in a person. It brings innovation and change which keeps us away from complacency and makes life interesting. Yes, one can argue about the benefits of socialism as against capitalism but never discourage competition.

I don’t know if the Minister for Education himself is an educated person or if he has kids who take interest in studying. If at all, the Minister of Education should lay down minimum educational requirement for a person to hold the post of a Minister. No exception to women or SC/ST. In this context I recently wrote to the editor of Times of India (and it was published in on-line edition a couple of days back) that certain key Ministerial positions, if not all, should be qualification based. These are Foreign Affairs, Finance and Defense Ministers. IFS, PhD in economics and ex-Army/Navy/Air Force Servicemen of a certain level could be the qualification for the respective Ministers.
Can I put you through a brief horror? Just imagine Laloo at the helm of foreign ministry. He will be Monster of Foreign Affairs.

Whether education should be free or not is a question of economics. If we have the means let it be free. But why rely on Govt? Can we sponsor a child’s education? Can we start giving free classes to our security guard’s or maid servant’s kids? Let’s give some jogging exercise to our minds.

While we talk of education, it’s simply not possible to ignore the issue of sex education. I can’t say whether as a society we are ready to impart it to teenagers. But going by what is being shown in Bollywood and tele-serials, I think sex education should be encouraged but not imposed. Incidentally, in a recent survey Indians topped the list of nationalities which most frequently visited porno web sites. Well, one may have to thank internet for giving free education to our children. Did someone mentioned about morality?

I can’t say what the Govt should be doing. Whether it would help to ban few outfits, arrest some people, improve intelligence or become close friends with Russia and China etc. I can’t say.
